I mean, what type of person would only like one marvel team/character? If they use a wiki, they are probably big enough fans to like the full Marvel Universe.
On the topic of the Phineas and Ferb crossover, Star Wars is one universe, and thats a non-canon crossover, unlike the X-Men. The X-Men are way too integrated into the Marvel universe that a X-Men only wiki is redundant. It's like making a wiki only for the Wolverine or Deadpool films.
So are you thinking a straight merge with Marvel Database might be the best course of action should a merge occur? It's an interesting debate for sure.
While I see what you mean about being interested in only one team, you will be covering other content as well but would be focusing more on the X-Men as that is the aim of the wiki.
Will the X-Men Wiki be available in app?
I’ve been thinking about the different Marvel wikis for awhile, and I’ve got a solution. This isn’t entirely on-topic, but it has a lot to do with what you’re trying to do.
**DISCLAIMER: this is a very long reply.**
Anyway, I think there should be:
•Marvel wiki—already exists
•Marvel movies wiki—combined MCU wiki and X-Men movies wiki, with additional information about Sony’s Marvel Universe, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and the Amazing Spider-Man duology (basically just every Marvel movie ever made, plus the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show).
And that’s it. No other Marvel related wikis. And I’ll tell you why: single character/team wikis are pointless.
Before I get to that, though, let me explain my reasoning for the wikis above. There are two very different types of ways people usually experience Marvel: the ENORMOUS amount of comic books, novels, games, etc., or the mainstream, hyped-up, blockbuster films (I’m not dissing the people who only watch the films. I’m one of them!).
What I’m trying to say is that if we had one Marvel wiki, there’d be an obvious problem: the people who just watch the movies are going to be extremely overwhelmed by the conversations going on about comics they’ve never read and characters they’ve never heard of. This is why we need more than one.
That second wiki would be the Marvel movies wiki. A wiki that incorporates all Marvel film universes, for the casual fans. And now, problem solved. One wiki for everything Marvel, one for the casual fans.
You might think “Well, what if you’ve only seen the MCU films? Wouldn’t you be lost on the Marvel movies wiki Discussions?” And my answer to that is no. If someone makes a post about something you haven’t seen, scroll past it!
Now, what if the opposite is true: you’ve never seen the MCU movies? Well, since the wiki would include so many different film universes, there’d be loads of other stuff to talk about!
If you still think the Marvel movies wiki is a bad idea, then I suggest having:
•A Marvel wiki—already exists
•An MCU wiki—already exists
•An Other Marvel Movies wiki—includes the X-Men movies wiki, with additional info on Sony’s Marvel Universe, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and the Amazing Spider-Man duology.
Now, you’re probably still thinking “So *why* are single character/team Marvel wikis pointless?”, and I’ll address that now. Any character or team is going to either be a part of the movies, or anything else Marvel. If they’re only part of the movies (say, an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wiki), then why make a whole separate wiki for them? If they’re only part of the comics? Same answer. If they’re part of both? Since we’re talking about the X-Men wiki, I’ll use that as an example.
So, the X-Men wiki. The X-Men are in both comics and films. *All* info on anything X-Men should be in the Marvel wiki, right? And any info on the X-Men films should be on the Marvel movies wiki. So why does it exist? It’s pointless.
So, to summarize:
•We can’t have just one Marvel wiki. There must be at least two. To fix this, we could either have a Marvel wiki and a Marvel movies wiki, or a Marvel wiki, an MCU wiki, and an Other Marvel Movies wiki.
•Single character/team wikis are pointless. They should not exist.
Aaaaand done! I hope you take my points into consideration. If you disagree with anything, please tell me! You might have thought about something I haven’t.
Not a bad idea, really, but I'll go into detail into why I still see it as confusing.
"plus the agents of shield show" and the 10 other MCU shows you're forgetting... Agent Carter, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Inhumans, The Punisher, Runaways and Cloak & Dagger, but that's beside the point.
Also, what about the other non-MCU tv shows? The Ghost Rider films? Blade? Fantastic Four? Fant4stic? Daredevil/Elektra? I'm guessing you forgot to mention?
Also, the Marvel wiki has to include the movies for multiverse listing purposes. You can still have the Marvel Movies Wiki, but it's still going to be there.
Personally, I believe it should be:
Marvel Wiki
Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki
X-Men Movies Wiki
Everything else gets detailed Marvel Wiki pages. The MCU and X-Men are still on there, but it's less detailed.
1. Yes, those shows too. I have no idea why I completely forgot about them! Sorry!
2. All of those would be on the Marvel Movies wiki, or the Other Marvel Movies wiki.
3. Yes, I know that. The Marvel wiki definitely should have info on the movies on it. It should have info on everything Marvel on it.
The Marvel wiki is for everything Marvel, the Marvel Movies wiki would be for only the movies. I don't want to have one wiki be comics and one be movies, I want one to be for the hardcore fans to talk everything Marvel, and one for the casual fans who only watch the movies/TV shows to be able to discuss them.
Uh not yet, so i think that we're gonna wait until the time is right!
Hey guys! More great points have been made and it's really important to have these conversations when deciding on future prospects for any community.
In terms of the argument that comics content would confuse casual fans, I am wondering if it would actually make them more inquisitive and curious for content that inspired areas from the movies. While Game of Thrones is clearly a much smaller example, there was appeal to have that backstory from the books included with the TV show content to make the wiki richer and more comprehensive. Basically, you encourage your readers to explore the wiki and find out new things.
Regarding merge alternatives, it's great you brought those up and want to explore ways to grow the community. Merging all the movie wikis together sounds like an interesting idea and has actually been done over at Marvel Movies Wiki. Whether you think of merge with that wiki might be appropriate would be interesting to know.
I'm still thinking not including the comic book content that inspired the content in the movies removes the chance for readers to explore your wiki and find out everything they want to know about the X-Men in one unified X-Men Wiki.
You have brought up that users can find out this information on Marvel database, and I will pose the question: Do you think a straight up merge with that is something you would want or feel would be the best solution?
I know I've asked it before, but just to clarify that is all.
This is a great discussion guys, keep it going! :)
Hi guys! Sorry for the double post!
I've spoken with Fandom staff and there may be a workaround here where a merge wouldn't happen but wikis could cooperate and work together more to cover a wide variety of content. This may involve wikis linking to one another and affiliating. How does that sound?
I'll back to you with more details on this if you'd like, Fandom staff are working on the best way to go about this.
Your input has been really great and you've asked some great questions. Hopefully it allowed us to think about the future relationship between the X-Men wikis and when the X-Men join forces with the MCU. Thanks again!
(Regarding your first reply)
1. Yes, having the comic content on the wiki could make fans more curious. It’s a great idea, but my problem is Discussions.
If some users haven’t read any comics, and most posts are about the comics, then those users might feel left out, and wouldn’t be able to experience what Discussions is really about. Maybe we could have links on the wiki going out to the Marvel Database? Like a section titled “Comic Counterparts”.
2. There *is* a Marvel Movies wiki? That’s perfect. I would love to have that on the app.
3. I don’t think merging with the Marvel Database is a good idea. Their articles seem like they’d need the least help out of all of the Marvel wikis. I think if this wiki were to merge with any wiki it would be the Marvel Movies wiki.
(Addressing your second reply)
If people think that this wiki is really needed, then cooperating would be best. I still think merging is the best idea, but that’s just me.
