History[]
X-Men: The Last Stand[]
Worthington Labs, owned by Warren Worthington II, has its headquarters based in California, specifically in San Francisco.
Worthington Labs also had a research facility on Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay. The mutant "cure" that was developed by Worthington Labs was first made public at a press conference on Alcatraz. Leech, the source of Worthington's new cure, was also held in containment on Alcatraz.
Following its disclosure to the public, the "cure" aroused much controversy, almost immediately igniting nationwide protests against it. One such protest was held outside of the Worthington Labs headquarters building. Worthington had convinced his son to volunteer as the first mutant to benefit from the new "cure". However, Angel changed his mind at the last minute and caused a public scene by breaking out of the headquarters.
Later on, the Brotherhood of Mutants selected Alcatraz as a symbolic target (due to its connection with the cure) in what they thought would be the opening of a war between humanity and mutant-kind. As a way of transporting his large host of mutant combatants, Magneto levitated San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge towards the island. Not long after, the Battle of Alcatraz Island ensued, and events were in the Brotherhood's favor before the arrival of the X-Men.
