"All I ever wanted was to travel the world, exotic places, meet new exciting people, and then kill them. So, I became a mercenary. I love what I do. I'm Wade Wilson. They call me 'The Merc With a Mouth.'"
―Wade Wilson[src]

Deadpool (born Wade Winston Wilson) was a mutant who possessed superhuman strength and a regenerative healing factor. He served on Team X under the command of William Stryker before he was injected with a myriad of mutant DNA, allowing him access to all of their powers.

Biography[]

Member of Team X[]

"Right, it's probably not as intimidating as having a gun, or bone claws, or the fingernails of a bag lady."
―Wade Wilson[src]

Wade Wilson was a soldier and mercenary with enhanced reflexes and agility due to him being a mutant, putting him far beyond the average human.

During the Vietnam War in mid-late 1973, a young Wade was a member of a black ops group called Team X under the command of William Stryker. The team also included James "Logan" Howlett, Victor Creed, Chris Bradley, Agent Zero, John Wraith, and Fred Dukes.

During one of the team's missions, they were sent to Africa to obtain adamantium by infiltrating a diamond trafficking facility. Once the team made it up the elevator using Bradley's technopathy, Wade was tasked with eliminating all of the guards that were awaiting them at the top floor. Wade oscillated his blades at such a speed that all incoming bullets were deflected towards the guards and cleared the path for the team and decapitated the last two guards. Wade declared in a sarcastic tone that people are dead, with Stryker coming out and claiming that he would be the perfect soldier if it weren't for his inability to stop talking.

After finding details about the source of the adamantium, the team visits a village where Wade serves as a translator between Stryker and the Igbo-speaking inhabitants. Wade continuously translates the words of the people to being that they can't tell the location of the source of the adamantium to Team X. Wade looks at Logan smugly before continuing to tell the team that the people are refusing to tell Stryker the source of the adamantium. Stryker eventually gives up trying to achieve his goal peacefully, and orders the team to start killing civilians. This ultimately causes a divide in the members of Team X. Zero, Wade, and Victor all engage in the massacre and start killing people without any hesitation. On the other hand, Logan, Fred, Chris, and John all show discomfort with having to kill civilians. Logan stops Zero and Victor from doing anymore damage, with Wade noticing and putting his blades away. After an argument with Victor, Logan leaves the team. After this event, Chris, followed by John and then Fred, begin to question the team's morality and subsequently leave, leaving only Wade, Zero and Victor loyal to Stryker.

Becoming Weapon XI[]

Six years later, after Team X broke up, Wade was taken to Stryker's base at Three Mile Island, where he was experimented on for the Weapon XI project. He was the first Team X member to be killed by Victor, and his body was used as a catalyst for the Weapon XI project. With Victor's help, Stryker gathered and collected the DNA from mutants whose powers could be used collectively within one body without destroying it, with Wade being the host body. By then, Wade was gone, and was now known as Weapon XI, "The Mutant Killer" - Deadpool (as Stryker explained - a "dead" mutant who had other powers "pooled" up into him). Stryker also seals Wade's mouth and gives him an adamantium skeleton.

Wade, now called Deadpool, was sent to fight Wolverine after Victor was defeated. Dr. Carol Frost said the project was not finished, but Stryker said to do it anyway. After freeing the captured mutants, Wolverine is stopped by the now active Weapon XI - Deadpool.

Using Chris Bradley's power, Stryker was able to control him to kill Wolverine. They fight as the other Mutants flee. With the other powers, he had from several other mutants (including Cyclops' optic beams, Wolverine's healing power, John Wraith's teleportation, Chris Bradley's technopathy, and Wade's prized blades used as two retractable arm blades) he was ready to fight and kill Wolverine.

Logan faces Weapon XI alone and eventually climbs one of the cooling towers, Weapon XI follows in an instant using Wraith's teleportation ability. Logan puts forth his best effort but is pinned down. Just as Weapon XI is about to decapitate him (at the command of Stryker), Victor later joined to help Logan as he shoves Deadpool away, and both of them fall into the tower. Victor catches Logan, explaining the only reason he saved him was so he could kill him himself.

Logan and Victor eventually end up back to back to fight Wade from both sides. They finally catch him and stab him, but he teleports across the tower. Victor attacks Deadpool as he fires on Logan with his optic blasts. Logan falls over the edge of the tower as Victor is caught jumping at Weapon XI and shot back. Logan climbs back onto the tower, and just as Weapon XI is blasting Victor into the ground, Logan runs, jumps, and slashes Weapon XI through the neck. Weapon XI holds his neck as Logan kicks him into the cooling tower, his head falling off as he tumbles below, with the lasers still firing.

Later, Wilson's decapitated head was revealed to still be alive.

Decades later, his name appeared on Stryker's Computer.

Timeline Rewritten[]

Killed by Future Deadpool[]

Main article: Deadpool's Time Travels

A future Deadpool travels back in time using Cable's Time Slider to undo Vanessa Carlysle's death. After time-travelling for a bit, he goes back to 1979 to kill the Weapon XI version of Deadpool.[1]

Personality[]

Wade retained similar personality traits to his counterparts from the comics and the revised timeline. Much to the annoyance to other members of Team X, Wade was extremely talkative and often cracked jokes on missions. This was considered his one flaw by Stryker, who otherwise saw him as the perfect soldier and as a result when Wade became Weapon XI, Stryker made sure to have Wades mouth sewn shut.

In addition to this, however, Wade had similar personality traits to Agent Zero, being a ruthless killer who was completely loyal to Stryker.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

Deflect

"If you didn't have that mouth on you, Wade, you'd be the perfect soldier."
William Stryker to Wade Wilson[src]
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Wade is very alert and fast-reacting, able to dodge and deflect bullets without much effort. He can react to multiple opponents simultaneously, even from behind to quickly counter.
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Wade possesses superhuman healing capabilities, able to mend and regrow any part of his anatomy. It was suggested that this healing factor was stronger than that of Victor's, as Stryker chooses Wade to be the next weapon after Logan as opposed to him, who Stryker explains wouldn't survive a procedure to give him an adamantium skeleton.

Augmented Powers[]

"All of their strengths and none of their weaknesses."
William Stryker[src]
  • Optic Blasts: Derived from Scott Summers' genes, Wade can fire powerful optic blasts. Shown able to produce intense concussive or heat beams, a single blast was able to decimate an entire factory tower. When using this ability Wade's eyes turn black around his skin.
  • Phase-Jumping: Derived from John Wraith's genes, Wade can instantaneously teleport to anywhere he chooses, provided he has proper knowledge of where it is.

Weapon XI fighting Logan

  • Retractable Blades: As Weapon XI, Wade was implanted with full-length straight ninjatō blades that can retract into his forearms similar to Wolverine's blades. They are also made of adamantium, allowing him to slice to virtually any target.
  • Technopathy: Derived from Chris Bradley's genes, the power which Chris Bradley demonstrated, the ability to control electrical/wireless devices and receive electrical/wireless signals, was given to Wilson. This is the way William Stryker was able to activate, command, and control Weapon XI. While unknown if Wade could manipulate technology himself, Stryker was able to use this power to send him commands, effectively controlling Weapon XI.

Abilities[]

  • Master Swordsman: Wade was extremely skilled in wielding his dual swords in battle.
  • Bilingualism: Wade spoke English and Igbo, serving as Team X's translator.

Equipment[]

"I love this weapon more than any other thing in the world. Wanna know why?"
"No."
"It's memorable. Sure it's bulky, hard to get on planes. You whip out two swords at your ex-girlfriend's wedding; they will never,
ever forget it."
―Wade Wilson and Sabretooth[src]
  • Katanas: Deadpool carries two samurai katana swords.
  • Adamantium Skeleton: After he became Weapon XI, Stryker bonded Wilson's skeletal structure with adamantium, just like Wolverine. This can be seen every time he phase-jumps using John Wraith's powers.

Behind the Scenes[]

The notorious decision to graft this version of Wade Wilson's mouth shut in the script came from Tom Rothman, former Chairman and CEO of 20th Century Fox, who had disliked the character of Deadpool so much he actively prevented a film adaption from being greenlit for many years during his tenure with 20th Century Fox.

After test footage of Deadpool was leaked in 2014 with the goal of generating fan interest and convincing executives at 20th Century Fox to greenlight a proper film adaptation, Ryan Reynolds, doing the voiceover for Deadpool, at the end of video jokingly says "Hi Tom!" as a potshot to Rothman who had left Fox a year prior.
