The Free Mutants was a mutant resistance organization formed by Bishop in response to the War of the Sentinels.
History[]
Original Timeline[]
U.S. Border Control[]
In 2008, the U.S. erected a 2,000 mile-long wall along the U.S.-Mexican border to hinder movement of mutants from Mexico. Politicians maintained that the structure was a necessary measure for the prevention of illegal immigration. Others contended that the wall was a last-ditch effort to contain Mexico's growing population of mutant rebels. After the wall's construction, Warpath's mutant group was seen moving along the wall.[1]
Imprisoned Mutants Escaped[]
In 2012, around thirty mutants are rescued from mutant prison camps run by Trask Industries. Blink was known to have been instrumental in smuggling the detained mutants out of the camps through the use of her portal-warping powers.[1]
Free Mutants' Foundation[]
In 2018, Bishop, an escapee from Camp X-Ray, built a global network of mutant resistance, later known as the Free Mutants.[1]
Battle of Moscow[]
By 2023, the Free Mutants were still on the run from the Sentinels and were some of the last surviving mutants left. Although they lacked the resources and the manpower to overcome their enemies and win the war, they were nevertheless able to evade the Sentinels and survive their attacks through the use of Shadowcat's time-traveling abilities.[2]
Joining the X-Men[]
In 2023, after using Shadowcat's powers to avert a Sentinel attack in Moscow, the Free Mutants relocated to a monastery in China, where they were joined by four more X-Men survivors: Storm, Wolverine, Professor X, and Magneto. There, Xavier revealed to the others his plan to have Shadowcat send him back in time to 1973 so that he could prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, which would ensure that the Sentinels were never created. However, due to the sheer stress that such a journey through time could have on the human mind, Shadowcat advised Xavier against it and warned him that he would die in the process. This prompted Wolverine to volunteer to go instead, as his regenerative abilities would enable him to survive the trip. Initially, some members of the Free Mutants, notably Bishop, Blink and Sunspot, bore their doubts about the plan. However, with the encouragement of Professor X and Storm, the group eventually agreed with the plan, unofficially joining the X-Men.[2]
Battle of China[]
Unable to flee, the Free Mutants were forced to make their last stand as a horde of Sentinels attacked the monastery to ensure the X-Men's ultimate plan's success. In the ensuing battle, Storm, Bishop, Colossus, Warpath, Sunspot, Blink, and Iceman were all killed, while Magneto was severely injured trying to help them. The Sentinels then breached the monastery doors and prepared to kill the last four remaining mutants. However, right before the Sentinels would have killed them, Shadowcat severed her connection to Wolverine, enabling the changes he made to timeline to take effect and successfully erase the dark future of 2023 from history.[2]
Revised Timeline[]
A Second Chance[]
After the original timeline was altered by Wolverine, the War of the Sentinels was erased from history. As a result, the Free Mutants was never formed, and its members were never slaughtered in the future war.[2]
