Professor X (born Charles Francis Xavier) was a mutant, the leader and creator of the X-Men and the founder of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and one of the most powerful telepaths in the world (rivaled only by Jean Grey). His dream of a peaceful coexistence between mutants and humanity has long been the driving force for the X-Men. An immensely powerful telepath and scientific genius, Professor X had been known as the heart and soul of the X-Men, having first formed the team of mutants back in 1962.

X-Men: First Class

Charles meets Raven.

As a child at the age of 12 in 1944, Charles met a shape-shifting girl named Raven, who had broken into his family's mansion and was scrounging for food. Overjoyed to meet someone else "different" like him, he invited her to live with his family. Raven and Charles soon become best friends.

A natural genius, Charles attended Oxford University (accompanied by Raven, now his foster sister), earning a Ph.D. in Genetics. After completing his thesis on genetic mutation at age 30, he is approached by Agent Moira MacTaggert of the CIA for his help to stop a mutant named Sebastian Shaw, who is working with the Soviet Union. MacTaggert introduces him and Raven to the CIA, where they prove to her chief, John McCone, that mutants exist and that Shaw is a threat. McCone refuses to employ them, but The Man in Black offers to be their sponsor.

Wolverine-XMFC

Charles and Erik approach Logan.

Charles accompanies MacTaggert, MiB and a US Coast Guard assault team to arrest Shaw on his yacht. During the attack, his telepathy is blocked by Emma Frost. They also encounter Erik Lehnsherr, who was launching his own solo attack against Shaw at the time. When Shaw escapes in a submarine, Xavier prevents Lehnsherr from killing himself in an attempt to stop it and brings him to the CIA's secret Division X facility. There they meet a young scientist named Hank McCoy, a prehensile-footed mutant with enhanced intelligence, who Xavier identifies as a mutant. He then uses a mutant-locating device designed by Hank called Cerebro to find and recruit mutants to stop Shaw. Refusing CIA help, he and Lehnsherr travel the world, discovering and recruiting various mutants: exotic dancer Angel Salvadore (Tempest); taxi driver Armando Muñoz (Darwin); Army prisoner Alex Summers (Havok); and Sean Cassidy (Banshee). They also approach Canadian mercenary Wolverine (then known as James "Jimmy" Howlett), but he immediately rebuffs them.

Lehnsherr and Xavier collaborate with the CIA to find and capture Shaw, who was supposed to be meeting with a high-ranking Soviet general. Soon after their arrival, they discover that Frost has attended the meeting in his place, and capture her instead. Interrogating her leads to the revelation that Shaw intends to spark a third world war to wipe out humanity, leaving mutants as the dominant species. Meanwhile, the other Hellfire Club mutants attack Division X, converting Tempest to their cause and killing Darwin in the process.

With the facility destroyed, Xavier relocates the mutants to his family mansion. During their stay there, Xavier applies his telepathy to help Erik reach new heights of his magnetic ability. He also trains the other mutants to control their powers.

Xavier's new team is soon called into action when Shaw engineers a stand-off between amassed United States and Soviet naval forces. When a Soviet freighter is forcibly commandeered by the Hellfire Club and attempts to run the American blockade, Xavier telepathically searches the Soviet fleet in an attempt to locate Shaw but finds himself unable to do so because of a helmet Shaw possesses that blocks all telepathic contact. Xavier then took mental control of a Soviet officer and had the man destroy the freighter, thus averting a nuclear catastrophe.

When Banshee volunteers to employ his sound generation power as a sonar, Xavier telepathically monitors his progress and is able to then guide the Blackbird to Shaw's Submarine, where Lehnsherr magnetically extracts it from the water. The submarine and the Blackbird both crash shortly after, bringing both teams into direct conflict. Xavier stays with the jet and continues his search for Shaw by linking with Lehnsherr, who ventures into the stricken submarine alone. While Lehnsherr finds and kills Shaw, Xavier's attention is now turned to the new threat of the two naval fleets with crews who are rapidly becoming fearful of the mutants. The ships launch a combined missile/artillery strike against the mutants, which Lehnsherr quickly turns back on them. Xavier fights with Lehnsherr to prevent him from destroying the ships, but when MacTaggert fires a gun at Lehnsherr, a deflected bullet hits Xavier in the spine, rendering him unable to stand. A remorseful Erik leaves with Raven, Angel, and Shaw's enforcers Riptide and Azazel.

Later, a wheelchair - bound Xavier returns to the mansion where MacTaggert promises never to reveal his location. They kiss, whereupon Xavier wipes her memory of the events. He soon intends to establish a school for mutants at his family's Westchester mansion, which will also serve as a base of operations where he trains mutants for his personal team: the X-Men.

Between X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past

In 1965, Professor Xavier officially opened the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. During that year, however, America assumed a direct military role in the Vietnam War. As the war escalated throughout the mid-late 1960s, many students and staff at the school were drafted into the military, and ultimately, the school was unable to function. By the early 1970s, Xavier's school was defunct, and he reverted his mansion to a private residence once again. His estate had also fallen into considerable neglect and disrepair.[1]

By the late 1960s and early 1970s, Xavier himself had become somewhat of a recluse, living a mainly solitary life in his mansion - save for McCoy, who helped Xavier tend to the affairs of his estate. He had become embittered by both Erik Lehnsherr's alleged involvement in the Kennedy Assassination and by Raven's abandonment of him after years of being his foster-sister. Furthermore, during this time, McCoy developed a serum that not only regulated his own mutation but enabled Xavier to walk again. However, it also weakened his telepathic abilities.

Original Timeline

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Xavier guides a group of young mutants, including a young Scott Summers, Elizabeth Braddock and Emma from the Weapon X facility on Three Mile Island after being freed by Wolverine. Xavier gives Summers directions telepathically, which leads the mutants outside where Xavier waits. He then escorts them back to his school in a helicopter.

20 years before X-Men: The Last Stand

Years ago in 1986, a car stops outside the Grey residence in a quiet neighborhood. Out of the car step two men: Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. Erik turns to his friend and says he still doesn't know why he's there - couldn't Charles just make them say yes. As they start walking towards the house, Xavier answers that he could, but it's not his way, and he would expect Erik of all people would understand his feelings about the misuse of power. Erik asks when Charles will stop lecturing him, and Xavier answers he'll stop when Erik starts listening, and states that Erik is there because he needs him. Frustrated a bit, Erik asks if they'll have to meet each and every one of them in person, and Charles says no – but this one in special.

A minute later, the two are inside the living room with Mr. and Mrs. Grey, who are reading the brochure of Xavier's School. Mrs. Grey states that it's a beautiful campus, and her husband agrees that it looks great and wonders about Jean and her "illness"? Angered, Erik asks John Grey if he thinks his daughter is sick. Knowing his friend's temper, Charles interrupts and suggests that perhaps they should speak to Jean alone. Mrs. Grey agrees and calls her daughter to come down. A young redhead girl comes downstairs and sits on the armchair, and her parents leave to the other room. Sensing her using her powers, Xavier tells Jean that it's quite rude to read their thoughts without their permission.

Erik asks Jean if she thought she was the only one of her kind, and Charles explains that they're mutants – they're like her. Jean doubts that, and gives the two men a demonstration of her powers: outside the window, cars start floating in the air in front of the amazed eyes of the two mutants. A man's lawnmower flies out of his hands; another man stares in disbelief as the water from his hose start flowing upwards. Enchanted, Erik turns to his friend and tells him he likes this one. Charles tells Jean that she has more power than she can imagine. The question is – will she control that power, or let it control her. Outside, all the cars drop back to the ground.

X-Men

In the Capitol, Dr. Jean Grey is giving a speech in front of the senate, who is discussing a newly proposed Mutant Registration Law. Her mentor, Professor Charles Xavier, is in the audience, listening. She explains how mutant powers are triggered. Senator Robert Kelly interrupts her, saying that although her speech is very educational, it fails to address the issue in question: "are mutants dangerous?". She tells him that that is an unfair question – after all, the wrong person behind the wheel of a car can be dangerous. He answers that that may be true, and that is why they license people to drive, to which she answers, "Yes, but not to live." She says that mutants are exposed to hostility and violence as it is, and forcing them to expose themselves would put them in danger. He interrupts again, asking her what is it that the mutant community has to hide that makes them so afraid to identify. He then holds out a list of identified mutants living in the United States, and reads from it that there's a girl in Illinois that can walk through walls – what's to stop her, he asks, from walking into a bank safe, or into the White House, or into anyone else's house? Furthermore, he adds, there are even rumors of mutants so powerful that they can enter others' minds and control their thoughts, taking away their God-given free will. He goes on, saying that he thinks that American people have the right to decide if they want their children to go to school with mutants and be taught by mutants. To Xavier and Jean's disappointment, everyone applauds his words. He goes on, talking in favor of the Mutant Registration Act. Then, among the audience, Xavier notices a mysterious man whom he knows very well stepping outside, and follows him to the hall in his wheelchair.

The man is Erik Lehnsherr, also calling himself Magneto. Xavier calls to him by his real name and asks him what he is doing there. Erik pauses and, without looking backwards at his old friend replies: "Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answers?" Xavier asks him not to give up on humans, but Magneto tells him that he heard these arguments before. Charles tells him that it was a long time ago and that humanity has evolved since then. Magneto answers: "Yes, into us." Xavier briefly tries searching Magneto's mind, but Erik asks him what he is looking for. Xavier answers that he is looking for hope. Magneto answers mysteriously: "I will bring you hope, old friend, and I ask for only one thing in return: don't get in my way." He then yells as he walks away: "We are the future, Charles, not them. They no longer matter" Xavier seems disappointed. Afterwards, Xavier sends Storm and Cyclops to rescue Wolverine and Rogue from Sabretooth.

Wolverine manages to escape Jean Grey easily and runs away through the tunnels of Xavier's mansion. He is not sure which way to choose, but then he starts hearing voices in his head – Xavier, telepathically guiding him. He finds a closet with clothes and takes a shirt, before an elevator opens right next to him. He enters, and it closes on itself, taking him to the upper floors. He hides from some mutant kids running around, and then keeps running straight into a classroom, where Xavier is teaching a class. Xavier greets him hello and then finishes the lesson. The students leave, and then one of them, a girl named Kitty, runs back because she forgot her purse. She then exits by phasing herself through the door. Logan looks confused, and the professor introduces himself as Charles Xavier and offers Logan breakfast. Logan asks where he is, and Xavier answers that he is in Westchester, New York – he was attacked and his people brought him there for medical attention. Logan says that he doesn't need any medical attention and asks where Rogue is. Xavier answers that she is there too and that she is fine.

Just then, Logan's rescuers enter. Xavier introduces them as Ororo Munroe, AKA Storm, and Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops. Scott sends out his hand to shake hands with Logan, but Logan does not respond. Xavier tells him that they saved his life, and just then, Jean enters. Xavier introduces her as well, and then tells Logan that he is in his school for Gifted Youngsters – mutants, and that he is safe there from Magneto. Logan asks, "What’s a Magneto?", and Xavier answers that Magneto is a very powerful mutant, and that the mutant who attacked him is an associate of Magneto's called Sabretooth. Logan thinks the whole thing is ridiculous and starts leaving, roughly telling Scott to get out of his way. Xavier then tells him that he can help him figure out who he is. Telepathically, Xavier says to him that it's been 15 years since Logan lost his memory, showing that his telepathy can help Logan remember his past. Intrigued, Logan asks about what the place was.

Xavier tells Logan more about the school, convincing him that it is the best place for Rogue to be in. He then tells him that the school is only a cover – and that the lowers levels are completely different. Xavier shows Logan the hangar containing the X-Men's supersonic jet, the Blackbird. He explains that when he was a boy he discovered he could control people's minds, and when he was seventeen, he met a young man named Erik Lensherr, who had the ability to control magnetism. Believing that humanity would never accept them, Erik grew angry at humanity and became Magneto. Xavier offers Logan a deal – 48 hours to discover why Magneto is after him, in exchange to help uncovering his forgotten past.

Later, Jean explains to Professor X, Cyclops and Storm her findings about Wolverine – a supposedly indestructible metal called adamantium is fused to his entire skeleton. Ororo asks how could he have survived a procedure like that, and Jean explains that his mutation is a healing factor, which also makes his age impossible to determine – he could very well be older than the professor. Xavier asks who did this to him, and she says that he doesn't know, nor does he remember anything that happened before it. Xavier muses that it must have been experimentation on mutants. Cyclops asks him what he thinks Magneto wants with him, and Xavier says that he's not entirely sure that it's him Magneto wants.

Later that night, Logan had accidentally stabbed Rogue, causing her to absorb the former's powers, putting Logan into an unconscious state. Logan wakes up with Xavier sitting next to him. He asks the professor if Rogue is fine, and he answers that she will be alright. Wolverine asks what happened and Xavier answers that whenever Rogue touches someone she absorbs their energies. In the case of mutants, she absorbs their gifts. In the case of Logan, she absorbed his ability to heal. Logan says that he feels like she almost killed him, and Xavier says that if she held on any longer, she could have.

In the underground part of the mansion, Xavier and Cyclops are trying to figure out what Magneto wants with Wolverine. Xavier picks up that Scott does not like Logan. Just then, Logan and Ororo walk in, and Logan asks where Rogue is. Xavier, after a short mind scan, says that she is gone. A few minutes later, Xavier, Scott, Jean, Ororo and Logan enter a secured room and Xavier welcomes Logan to Cerebro. Cerebro is a big round room, with a bridge leading to the machine. Xavier explains that Cerebro amplifies his powers, allowing him to track mutants through large distances. That is how he intends to find Rogue. Logan asks why he just does not use it to find Magneto, and Xavier tells him that Magneto somehow found a way to shield himself from the machine. Logan asks how would he know how to do that, and Xavier says that he helped him build it. Then, he puts the Cerebro helmet on his head and, after the others exit, starts the search. Outside, Logan asks Jean if she ever used Cerebro, and she answers she has not, because it takes a certain degree of control and for someone like her it is dangerous. Inside, Xavier manages to locate Rogue at the train station after a short search. Logan starts leaving to find her but Xavier stops him, saying that if he will leave the mansion Magneto will capture him. Instead, he sends Cyclops and Storm to find her.

Outside the train station, where Magento, Sabretooth, and Toad have managed to capture Rogue, a police officer orders Magneto to stay where he is and put his hands above his head, an order that Magneto follows: his raises his hands and two police cars in the process, and then drops the cars on two other cars. All officers immediately aim their guns at him, but he easily pulls the guns out of their hands and directs them at them. Suddenly, Sabretooth grabs Magneto's neck and says "That's enough, Erik", and Toad says "Let them go". Magneto figures out what is happening, and yells, "Why don't you come out where I can see you, Charles?" Xavier, who is sitting in a car nearby with Jean, telepathically asks Magneto what he needs Rogue for, and Magneto answers, "Can't you read my mind?" He continues, trying to convince Xavier that he is right, saying that if they will pass that law they will have all mutants chained with numbers burned to their foreheads. Xavier says that it will not be that way, and Magneto tells him to kill him and find out. When Xavier does not respond, Magneto tells him that in that case, he should release him. When again he gets no response, he aims a gun at an officer with his powers, and fires. Everybody gasp, but when they open their eyes to see what happened, they find the bullet stuck in mid-air, barely an inch away from the officer. Magneto then aims all the guns at all the officers, and tells Xavier that he will not be able to stop them all. Xavier looks at Jean, sighs, and releases his mental hold on Sabretooth and Toad. Magneto then tells his old friend that his weakness is that he is still not willing to make sacrifices, and just then, Mystique arrives in a helicopter. Magneto, Toad and Sabretooth holding Rogue step inside, and they take off. All guns and the bullet drop to the ground.

Back at the mansion, Logan is washing his face and is angry at the professor for saying Magneto wanted him, and Xavier apologizes, saying he made a terrible mistake, as Magneto's helmet is somehow designed to stop his telepathy. Logan leaves angrily to find her alone, but Storm tries to convince him to help them and fight with them. Logan opens the door to leave, and finds Senator Kelly standing in the other side, looking for Dr. Jean Grey.

Underground, Kelly is lying on a table. Logan and Jean are standing there too. Xavier approaches him and introduces himself. Kelly says that he was afraid to go to a regular hospital, and Xavier completes his sentence, saying that he was afraid they would treat him like a mutant. He tells him that they are not all what he thinks, and Kelly tells him to tell that to the ones who did this to him. Xavier asks Kelly to relax and starts reading his mind. He enters his memory of Magneto turning him to a mutant, and Mystique helping him out of the machine. Magneto looks tired and weak from the process.

Back in reality, a short while later, Xavier, Scott, Jean and Logan are in a room upstairs. Xavier explains that Magneto uses a machine that produces radiation that triggers mutation in ordinary human beings. Jean continues, saying that the mutation is unnatural and Kelly's body is rejecting it – his cells are breaking down. Scott asks what the radiation will do to mutants, and Xavier answers that nothing, but it could seriously harm humans. Logan asks what Magneto wants with Rogue, and Xavier answers that he does not know. Annoyed, Logan turns to leave again, but then Scott finds the answer – the machine drew its power from Magneto, and it nearly killed him. He deduces that Magneto wants Rogue to absorb his power so she can do it in his place, allowing him live.

Storm enters Xavier's study just in time to break an argument between Scott and Logan and informs them that Senator Kelly is dead. Xavier tells them that he will go find Rogue, and orders the men to settle it. In Cerebro, Xavier puts on the helmet. Suddenly, the green liquid Mystique planted knocks him unconscious, and he faints and falls off his wheelchair. Later, he is lying on the lab's table, the X-Men and Wolverine looking at him. Jean checks what is wrong with Cerebro, and removes the green liquid. In the lab, Scott tells the unconscious professor how much he appreciates all that Xavier's done for him, and that if anything happens, he will take care of the school.

After the X-Men rescue Rogue and Xavier recovers, the professor tells Logan that there's an abandoned military compound in the Canadian Rockies close to where they found him, and that he might find some answers there. He then asks Logan if he's going to say goodbye to the kids.

In a plastic jail cell, Magneto and Xavier are playing chess. Magneto asks his old friend if it doesn't worry him that someday they'll pass that foolish law, and Xavier answers that it does indeed. Magneto asks him what he will do when he'll wake up to that, and Xavier answers that he pities the poor soul who'll come to his school looking for trouble. A guard comes to take Xavier, and Magneto asks him why he continues to come. Xavier responds by asking "Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answers?", and Magneto answers "Ah, yes – your continuing search for hope." Xavier leaves, as Magneto tells him that this plastic prison won't hold him forever. The war is still coming, he says, and he intends to fight it. Xavier replies, saying that he will always be there to stop him.

X2: X-Men United

In a museum in New York, the students of Xavier's school are on a field trip. After Pyro, Rogue, and Iceman have an altercation with two young men, suddenly all the people in the room stop moving, frozen in mid-action. Rogue asks Bobby what happened, and he says he didn't do this? In answer, Charles Xavier, wheels in. He tells John that the next time he feels like showing off – not to do it. A news report on television tells about the mutant attack on the Whitehouse, and Cyclops says that he thinks it's time to leave. The Professor agrees and everybody start moving once more, with the students and the X-Men gone.

Later in Xavier's study at the Institute, the X-Men are discussing the attack on the Whitehouse. Cyclops thinks Magneto is behind it, but Jean and the Professor disagree, thinking he won't be able to organize something like this from prison, not to mention it will only hurt his goals. Storm says the government will probably react by reintroducing the Mutant Registration Act, but Xavier fears it could be much worse – they could declare a state of emergency, placing every mutant in the country under arrest. Jean raises the question of the attacker, and the Professor says they have to get to him before the authorities. He's been trying to track him using Cerebro, but his movements are too sporadic. He tells them that when he has the exact location of this mutant, he wants Jean and Ororo to pick him up.

In Cerebro, the Professor is getting ready to find the mutant attacker. Wolverine enters and the Professor welcomes him back, but not before telling him to put out his cigar. Logan, looking for a place to put it out, finally decides to put it out on his palm, luckily the wound quickly heals. He asks Xavier if he wants him to leave. Xavier tells him to stand still. Everything gets dark, and then millions of dotted lights appear. Xavier explains that these lights represent every living person on the world – the white lights are human, the red are the mutants – through Cerebro he's connected to them and them to him. Logan changes the subject and says that he found the base in Alkali Lake, but there was nothing there. Xavier, seemingly ignoring Logan, says that the broken line represents the mutant who attacked the President – he's been having a hard time getting a lock on him. Logan asks if he can just concentrate harder, and Xavier answers that he could, but it would kill the mutant they are trying to find. Just then, the mutant stops running, and his voice is heard, praying in German. Xavier leaves Cerebro, and Logan asks him to read his mind again. Xavier says that the results will be the same as before – the mind is not a box that can simply be unlocked and opened. He has no doubt that Logan's amnesia, his adamantium skeleton and the claws are all connected, but sometimes the mind needs to discover things for itself. Before wheeling out, he asks Logan to watch over the kids that night, as he and Scott are going to visit an old friend.

In prison, Xavier and Cyclops arrive to visit Magneto. Scott has to wait outside as a guard wheels Xavier in on his plastic wheelchair. Magneto welcomes Xavier and asks if he came to rescue him, and Xavier answer "sorry, Erik, not today." Magneto asks why he's there, and Xavier asks him what he knows about the assassination attempt on the President. Magneto answers, knowing nothing. Xavier asks about something not being right, and asks Erik what happened to him. Magneto answers that he had frequent visitations from William Stryker. Xavier knows Stryker, because his son, Jason was once a student of his years ago. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to help him – at least not in the way his father wanted.

Magneto changes the subject to Wolverine. It seems that both Xavier and Magneto know something about Logan's past and it has to do with Stryker, but Xavier wants him to figure it out on his own. Xavier again senses that something is very wrong and asks Magneto what he has done. Magneto apologizes and says he couldn't help it. Xavier asks him what he told Stryker, and Magneto answers, everything. Through the plastic holes, some sort of gas can be heard slipping in, and Magneto says that the war has begun. Xavier is horrified to figure out what's happening and grabs the plastic doors and screams to Scott, while Magneto tells Xavier that he should have killed him when he had a chance. Both Xavier and Magneto fall asleep from the gas.

In Alkali Lake, Canada, Xavier is tied to a chair with a weird looking helmet on his head. He wakes up to find William Stryker sitting in front of him and Yuriko Oyama standing by the wall. The helmet keeps him from entering Stryker's mind. He asks him where is Scott? Stryker tells him not to worry – he's just giving him some re-education. Xavier realizes that this has to do with Stryker's son, and tells Stryker that he wanted him to cure his son, but mutation is not a disease. Stryker angrily accuses Charles of lying and tells him that back when Jason returned from Xavier's school he resented his parents, blaming them for his condition, so he toyed with their minds, projecting visions and scenarios into their brains. Mrs. Stryker, eventually, killed herself in an attempt to get the images out.

Xavier sees Lady Deathstryke and tells Stryker that for someone who hates mutants, he hangs out with them a lot. Stryker shows him that Yuriko has a controlling device on her back to keep her under control. Xavier suddenly realizes that Stryker arranged the attack on the President, and Stryker congratulates him on figuring it out without reading his mind. Yuriko leaves the room, and Stryker tells Xavier that it's frustrating that nobody really knows how many mutants exist or how to find them – except him. Unfortunately, he says, Xavier is too powerful to be mind controlled, so he'll go straight to the source. He then introduces Xavier to "mutant 143" – a young sick-looking mute man on a wheel chair, with pipes connected to his brain as a mind controlling agent. Xavier, to his horror, immediately recognizes him as Jason Stryker, and asks William in shock how he could have done this to his son. Stryker answers "No, Charles, my son is dead, just like the rest of you", and leaves. 

Xavier is standing on his legs in his study at the institute. He soon realizes it's just an illusion, and yells "Jason, stop it!" Jason doesn't respond at all, as he's under mind control, and keeps on with the illusions. Now Xavier is again sitting in his wheelchair, again at his study, and hears a little girl crying. He tells her she can come out and asks her where all the other students are. She says she doesn't know, and he says they'll have to find them using Cerebro. They leave the study. In Xavier's illusions, he is in the mansion's underground tunnels with the little girl, wheeling to Cerebro. After the eye-scan, the door opens, and the girl asks him to not leave her alone. He says she can come inside, and they enter. In the real world, the girl is Jason and a soldier is watching them.

All soldiers are set to defend Cerebro. Stryker enters the code and steps inside, seeing his son and Xavier. He leans and whispers to Jason's ears that it's time to find their friends – all of them – all the mutants, everywhere. In the illusion, the girl asks Xavier if it's time to find their friends – all of them – all the mutants, everywhere. Xavier agrees. Stryker tells his son to make him proud and leaves Cerebro. In the illusion, Xavier puts on the cerebral helmet and tells the girl not to move. Outside, Stryker orders the soldier to kill anyone who approaches, even if it's him. Xavier starts looking at the red lights that represent mutants.

In Xavier's illusion, the girl asks him if he found all the mutants yet and he answers he's trying – there are so many of them. She tells him to concentrate. Xavier is getting close to hurting the mutants. In the real world outside of Cerebro, the soldiers hear someone coming and aim their guns at him. Magneto and Mystique eventually walk to Cerebro undisturbed. Magneto puts on his helmet so Jason's illusions won't affect him. Inside, Xavier is concentrating on all the mutants. Magneto finally succeeds to open the doors, and Cerebro stops working. Xavier doesn't understand what's wrong, and the girl seems scared.

Magneto mocks Xavier's way, telling him that they're not playing by his rules so maybe it's time to play by theirs. He flies in the air and starts moving around the metal plates covering Cerebro's walls, opening the covers and covering the openings. Mystique watches him in awe. Magneto lands and nods to her, as she shifts into Stryker, steps inside and, in Stryker's voice, tells Jason that there's been a change of plans and whispers something in his ears. Magneto smiles, then says goodbye to his old friend Charles, and the too villains leave, closing the doors behind them. In the illusion, the girl tells Xavier that there's been a change of plans – they're targeting the humans now – all of them. This time, the white lights show up. Cerebro's effect gets to Stryker and he grabs his head in pain, just like every other "white light" in Cerebro, including President McKenna.

Outside Cerebro II, Nightcrawler hugs Storm and starts praying, and then they disappear in a purple cloud of smoke, and reappear inside Cerebro. They don't see Xavier, just the little girl standing where the machine is supposed to be placed. "She" greets them hello and asks who they're looking for. Storm isn't falling to the illusion, and calls out to the professor, asking if he can hear her and telling him that he's got to stop Cerebro, now. The girl asks who they're talking to, and Nightcrawler start walking to her. Storm stops him and tells him not to move. He says she's just a little girl, but Storm says she's not. Storm tells Nightcrawler that it's about to get very cold in there, and he says he's not going anywhere. Her eyes begin to glow and her hair begins to scatter as the girl asks what she's doing. Storm's eyes glow white as strong wind brews in Cerebro and the temperature drops. Nightcrawler falls to his knees from the intense cold.

In Xavier's illusion, the girl keeps telling him to find all the humans. In reality, Jason is freezing. In Storm's illusion, the girl yells at her to stop it and screams. The cold is too much for Jason to bear, and Xavier snaps out of his illusion and takes off the cerebral helmet. He looks back, to see Jason, Ororo and Kurt. In Cerebro, the ceiling collapses. Kurt teleports Ororo and Xavier out in time, but Jason is beyond help. All the mutants run through the halls to the spillway, believing it to be their only escape. They get to the doors, but Logan pops out of a tunnel and pops his claws in a fuse box, closing the door before they'll get caught in the flood. In tells them that they don't want to go that way, and then water burst through the cracks to confirm. Logan leads his friends through the other way out.

Outside, the water stops leaking through the dam, as they're redirected. The mutants rush out to the snow. Artie falls, and Logan carries him in his hands. To their shock and horror, the helicopter is already gone, taken by Magneto. Suddenly, the jet shows up spinning uncontrollably in the air. Rogue is piloting, and makes an emergency landing, crashing in the snow. Kurt teleports Xavier inside.

In the jet, Xavier tells Scott that they've got to get to Washington – he fears this has gone beyond their league. Scott and Ororo panic to realize that something's wrong and they can't take off. Rogue asks if anyone has seen John, and Jean answers after a short telepathic scan that he's with Magneto, to everyone's disappointment. The jet loses the power, and just then the water burst out through the dam again, not handling the pressure. Jean, in the back, realizes she has to do something, as she's their last hope. She looks at all her friends, and leaves the jet without them noticing. After a few seconds, though, Xavier notices and calls her name, alarming Logan and Scott. Xavier says she's outside, and Scott rushes to the exit. Jean telekinetically closes the door, keeping him inside, and activates the jet. Scott yells at Ororo not to take off, but Jean does it for her. Stryker falls with the dam and the water burst out in a humongous wave. Jean uses one hand to keep the water from drowning the jet and the other the free the jet's leg from the snow. Scott watches in misery and Logan orders Kurt to get her, but Kurt says she's not letting him. As her last words of goodbye, Jean uses her telepathy to speak through Xavier's mouth, saying she knows what she's doing – this is the only way. Scott begs her not to do this, and she says goodbye. Her body and eyes glow orange as she manages to release the jet's leg and lift it in the air. She releases her telekinetic grip, letting the water to drown her freely, and everybody grieve about her. Scott falls crying on Logan to the size of the tragedy. Everybody's overwhelmed, their throats choking with sorrow. The jet's flying above what is now a large sea. Kurt prays.

In Washington, President McKenna is walking to a live television broadcast from his office. He starts his speech: "My fellow Americans, in this time of adversity, we are being offered a moment – a moment to recognize a growing threat within out own population – and take a unique role in the shape of human events." Before he can keep talking, all the cameras and lights go off and everyone in the room besides him freeze. The sky turn dark and lightning strike, as the president sees the mutants standing in front of him, Storm's eyes glowing white. The lightning is the only thing to light their faces. He's scared to see his attacker, Nightcrawler, among them. Professor X greets the president good morning and calms him down, saying they won't harm anyone. The president asks who they are and Xavier answers that they're mutants, and his name is Charles Xavier. Rogue puts some documents down on the president's desk, and Xavier explains that they were taken from the private office of William Stryker. The president asks how they got it, and the professor answers that he knows a little girl who can walk through walls. The president says that he's never seen this information, and Xavier says he knows that. The president says he doesn't respond well to threats, and Xavier says that this is not a threat – this is an opportunity. There are forces in this world, he says, both human and mutant alike, who believe that a war is coming. As he can see from the files, some had already tried to start one, and there have been casualties – losses, on both sides. He ends by telling the president that what he's about to tell the world is true: this is a moment – a moment to repeat the mistakes of the past, or to work together for a better future. They're there to stay – the next move is his. Xavier says that they'll be watching, as lightning brightens all their faces, and suddenly they disappear and all the lights turn on again. The president is silent, not sure what to tell the cameras.

In Xavier's study, Scott is looking out the window. Xavier says that even when Jean was a student, she was always hesitant about her powers, always looking to others, fearing that in some way, she was left behind. Scott asks in a choked throat if they could have done more to save her, and Xavier says that in the past, she may have let them. Logan can't understand why she left the plane, and Xavier says that she made a choice. Students walk into the classroom, including Artie, Colossus, Jones, Bobby, Danielle Moonstar, and Jubilee. Logan and Scott leave, and Logan tells Scott that Jean did make a choice – it was Scott. Scott walks away, not finding that much comfort in it. Xavier stays silent and a student asks him if everything's alright. He answers that yes – it will be.

X-Men: The Last Stand

Professor X asks Wolverine to substitute for Scott fill for the Danger Room session. This is due to the fact that Scott is still in despair over the loss of Jean Grey.

Professor Xavier is then seen teaching his ethics class about use and misuse of power – he states that one can use power for the greater good, or for personal gain and destructive ends. This is a dilemma they all must ask themselves. Why? Because they're mutants. For psychics, he says, this presents a particular problem: when is it acceptable to use their powers, and when do they cross that invisible line that turns them into tyrants over their fellow men? Shadowcat remarks that Einstein said that ethics are an exclusive human concern without any superhuman authority behind it, and Xavier replies that Einstein wasn't a mutant – as far as they know. The kids all giggle and Xavier proceeds to show them a tape sent to him by Dr. Moira MacTaggert.

In the tape, Dr. MacTaggart stands by a man in a hospital bed. She says that the man was born with no higher-level brain functions: his organs and nerves system work, but he has no consciousness to speak of. Xavier turns the video off and asks his students an ethical question: what if they were to transfer the consciousness of one person, say, a father of four with terminal cancer, into the body of this man? How are they to decide what falls between the range of ethical behavior and what…? Suddenly, he stops mid-sentence. Outside the window, gigantic rain clouds are forming. A moment passes in silence, and then Xavier dismisses the class, saying they'll continue this tomorrow.

Out on the balcony, Storm stands in the wind, staring at the rain clouds. Xavier shows up behind her and reminds her that the forecast was for sunny skies. Storm apologizes, and her eyes begin to glow. Within a few seconds, the clouds scatter and the sun comes out. The professor wheels closer to her and says he doesn't have to be psychic to know that something's bothering her.

They walk inside, and Ororo tells the professor that she doesn't understand: Magneto is a fugitive, they have a mutant in the cabinet, a president who understands them – why are they still hiding? Xavier answers that they're not hiding, but they still have enemies out there, and he must protect his students. Storm agrees, but she also thinks they can't be students forever. Xavier laughs and says he hasn't thought of her as his student in years. In fact, he thought she might take his place someday. Hearing that, Ororo stops walking. She thought Scott will be the one to take Charles's place. Xavier explains that Scott is a changed man – he took Jean's death so hard… He tells Storm that things are indeed better out there – but she of all people should know how fast the weather can change. She realizes there's something he's not telling them, but he just sighs and wheels on.

They walk into another room to find Hank McCoy examining a painting on the wall. Ororo is thrilled to see her old friend and they hug and compliment each other on what they did with their hairs. Hank thanks Xavier for seeing him on such short notice, and the professor tells him he's always welcomed there – he's a part of this place. McCoy says he has news, and Xavier asks if it's Erik. Beast says no, although they have been making some progress on that front – Mystique was recently apprehended. Just then, Logan walks in and asks, "who's the fur ball?" Hank introduces himself as Secretary of Mutant Affairs, and Logan sarcastically compliments him on his suit. Xavier introduces Logan to Hank, but Beast has already heard of Wolverine.

Storm interrupts and says Magneto will definitely come to get Mystique, but Beast says Magneto's not the problem – at least not the most pressing one. He tells the X-Men that a major pharmaceutical company has developed a mutant antibody – a way to suppress the mutant X-gene, permanently. They're calling it a "cure." For a moment, everybody is quiet, taking in the news, until Storm breaks the silence, saying that's ridiculous – they can't "cure" being a mutant – since when have they become a disease? Xavier stops her, sensing that they're announcing it now.

In Worthington Labs in Alcatraz, Warren Worthington Jr. is giving a speech at a press conference. He says that these so-called mutants are people, just like the rest of them. Their mutation, he says, is nothing more than a disease, a corruption of healthy cellular activity. He stands there to tell the world that there's hope – Alcatraz, which used to be the world's greatest prison, will now be the source of freedom for all mutants who choose it.

Later, the professor senses Cyclops' distress. Telepathically, Scott's name is heard all over the school. Clearly, something is horribly wrong. Wolverine and Storm run through the halls hysterically to Xavier's office, not knowing what the hell happened. They burst open his door and ask if he's okay, and he tells them to get to Alkali Lake.

Jean Grey and Charles Xavier

Later in the school's infirmary, Logan and Professor X are at Jean's side. Xavier tells Logan that the sheer mass of the water that collapsed on top of Jean should have obliterated her completely. The only explanation of her survival is that her powers wrapped her up in a cocoon of telekinetic energy. Logan asks if she'll be okay, and Xavier says that Jean Grey is the only Class 5 mutant he ever encountered – her potential in practically limitless. Her mutation is seeded in the unconscious part of her mind, posing a danger. When she was a girl, Xavier built several psychic barriers in her mind to isolate her powers from her conscious mind, and as a result, Jean developed a dual personality: the conscious Jean whose powers were always in her control, and the dormant side, a personality that came to call itself "The Phoenix," a purely instinctual creature.

Taking this in, Wolverine asks Xavier if Jean knew all this. Xavier answers that it's unclear how much she knew, but far more critical is whether the woman in front of them is the Jean Grey they know or the Phoenix, furiously struggling to be free. Logan says she looks pretty peaceful to him, but Xavier says that's because he's keeping her that way, trying to restore the psychic blocks to cage the beast again.

Thinking this is too much, Logan angrily asks the professor what he's done to Jean – they're talking about a person's mind here. Xavier asks Wolverine to understand that Jean has to be controlled, but Logan tells him that sometimes when you cage the beast, the beast gets angry. The professor tells Logan he has no idea what Jean is capable of, but Logan corrects him that he had no idea what the professor was capable of. Xavier explains that he had a terrible choice to make, and he chose the lesser of two evils. Logan answers that it sounds to him like Jean had no choice at all. Charles gives up and says he doesn't have to explain himself – least of all to Wolverine – and continues to work on Jean's mind. Angry, Logan walks out.

Storm and Professor X rush in to find Wolverine still unconscious on the floor. Ororo wakes Logan and asks him what happened, and he asks where Jean is. Worried that his greatest fear has come true, Xavier asks Logan what he has done. Logan tells them that he thinks Jean killed Scott, but Storm says that's not possible. Furious, Xavier tells Logan he warned him and tries to scan for Jean telepathically. He finds that she left the mansion, but she's trying to block his thoughts. She's so strong, he tells them. It may be too late.

Not long later, outside Grey residence, a car stops. Out of it step the three X-Men, and Xavier tells Logan and Ororo to wait for him outside – he needs to see Jean alone. Magneto shows up in front of them and tells Charles he was right – this one is special. Wolverine asks Erik what he's doing there, and Magneto answers "same as the professor – visiting an old friend." Xavier tells Erik that he doesn't want trouble there, and Erik answers that neither does him. Magneto offers they go inside, and the two continue towards the house.

Xavier asks Erik not to interfere – he came to bring Jean home. Magneto jokes that it's just like old time, and Xavier says she needs help. She's not well. Erik says Xavier sounds just like her parents all these years ago. On the front lawn stand several of Magneto's followers. On their way inside, Magneto tells Juggernaut not to let anyone else inside. He then opens the door, and the two walk in.

They slowly wander through the house between furniture floating in the air, until they get to the living room to find Jean standing in front of them. Jean tells her mentor she knew he'd come, and he says he came to bring her home. She coldly tells him she has no home, but he says she does – she has a home and a family. Magneto walks closer and tells Jean that Xavier thinks her power is too great for her to control. Charles asks Erik not to intrude, but Erik tells Xavier his mind games won't work. Jean asks Xavier if he wants to control her. He says no, but Magneto interrupts again and says he does. Xavier argues he wants to help her, but Jean asks what's wrong with her. Magneto says absolutely nothing is wrong with her, and Xavier yells at him to stop. Magneto angrily says he won't stop, not this time – Xavier always held her back. Xavier tells Jean it was for her own good, but she responds by telekinetically smashing a lamp on the wall, telling him to stay out of her head.

All doors and windows in the house slam shut, as Jean's mind begins to rage. Xavier tells her to look at him – he can help her – but she just angrily tells him again to get out of her head and moves his wheelchair back a little. Erik tells him that perhaps he should listen to her, but Xavier ignores him and begs Jean to trust him – she's a danger to everyone and herself, but he can help her. Magneto provokes Xavier by saying he sounds like the humans wanting to give her the cure, but Xavier keeps talking to Jean, telling her to look at what happened to Scott – she killed the man she loves because she couldn't control her powers. Hearing this, Jean snaps and releases a huge telekinetic blast, smashing the windows and sending Magneto flying to the kitchen floor.

In the living room, Phoenix is causing a telekinetic storm, and everything is flying around. Xavier, struggling with her mentally, asks her again to let him in her mind, but she won't listen. Professor Xavier is slowly lifted from his wheelchair, floating upright in the air, in front of the amazed eyes of Magneto. In fact, the entire house is lifted from the ground several feet, and Logan is also lifted from the floor, slamming into the ceiling. Xavier's entire body tense up, but his expression doesn't change a bit. Magneto, realizing this is going a step too far, yells from the kitchen for Jean to stop, pleading her not to do this, but she's not listening.

Wolverine starts using his claws to move around, sticking them into the ceiling and pulling himself towards the living room, struggling with Jean's telekinesis keeping him glued to ceiling. He manages to get to the door and open it, arriving just in time to see Charles Xavier's whole body starting to move, as if his very skin is blowing in the wind like waves. Logan and Erik watch helplessly and in disbelief from opposite sides as Jean Grey is using her powers on her former mentor.

Suddenly, between all of the mess and the noise and the objects flying around, there is a moment of silent felt only by Jean and Xavier – as if time is moving in slow motion just for the two of them for a few seconds. Knowing these are probably his last words, Charles Xavier smiles and tells Jean to not let it control her. Then, in a second, the unbelievable happens – in front of Wolverine and Magneto's astonished eyes, Professor Charles Xavier's body blows up and vanishes to thin air.

Logan and Ororo run into what used to be the living room, but find just an empty wheelchair. They look at each other with tears in their eyes and heavy breaths, realizing that their beloved mentor is gone. Logan drops to his knees, helpless, yelling "No!" Ororo breaks down in tears and falls on his back, hugging him. The two powerful X-Men are left alone in the wrecked house in front of an empty wheelchair, sobbing.

The day after in Xavier's mansion, the wheelchair is resting in Xavier's study, orphaned of its owner. Outside on the front yard, Ororo Munroe is eulogizing Charles Xavier in a memorial service in front of all his students: "We live in an age of darkness," she says, "a world full of fear, hate and intolerance. But in every age, there are those who fight against it. Charles Xavier was born into a world divided, a world he tried to heal – a mission he never saw accomplished. It seems the destiny of great men to see their goals unfulfilled."

In the crowd sit Marie D'Ancanto, Bobby Drake, Kitty Pryde, Peter Rasputin, Hank McCoy and many other students and friends of Xavier's. Logan isn't sitting with them, as he is standing and listening from afar, a loner as always. Rogue looks at him, as Ororo continues her eulogy: "Charles was more than a leader, more than a teacher, he was a friend. When we were afraid he gave us strength, and when we were alone he gave us a family. He may be gone, but his teachings live on through us, his students."

Tears fill Kitty's eyes as she listens. Bobby, sitting next to her, puts his hand on hers to comfort her. Ororo finishes: "Wherever we may go, we must carry on his vision, and that's a vision of a world united." Logan walks away. All other people present stand up, and one walks to his memorial and puts a flower on it.

After the battle at Alcatraz, Moira returns to Muir Island to check on her comatose patient. At the hospital, where the comatose man from the video that Xavier showed his students, is lying in a hospital bed. Moments later, Moira MacTaggart enters the room, says good morning to her patient and proceeds to view the vital signs on the monitor. The man then turns his head and to Moira's surprise, returns the greeting and calls her name in Charles' voice. Dr. Moira looks towards her patient in disbelief and says "Charles", confirming that Charles' consciousness survived his physical death.

The Wolverine

Years after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand - Xavier returns in his twin brother's body, still needing a wheelchair to move around due to his twin brother's body having developed muscle atrophy as a result of being in a coma for decades. Along with Magneto, he solicits Logan's help against dark forces seeking to destroy mutant-kind. When Logan questions Xavier about how he's returned, Xavier reminds him "you're not the only one with gifts."

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Charles Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine, and Storm arrive to meet the mutants hiding in China, where they plan to send Professor X back to 1973 to stop Mystique from killing Bolivar Trask, which triggered the Sentinel Program. However, they learn that while Shadowcat has the power to project someone's mind that far, the process is too damaging to be used sending someone more than a month into the past and not even Professor X could survive the trip. Realizing that with his healing powers he could make the trip, Wolverine volunteers in Professor X's place.

As the X-Men hide in a monastery, Wolverine is sent back to the past by Shadowcat but not before being asked by Professor X and Magneto to unite them together in 1973 to stop Mystique. Professor X warns Wolverine that he will be going back to a time where the Professor is unsure of himself and Wolverine must be the mentor to him that he was to Wolverine. After his past self tells Wolverine that he is the wrong man for the job, Wolverine explains how he was the only one who could do it and has Past Professor X enter his mind to communicate with Future Professor X. Future Professor X is able to convince his past self not to give up hope on peace between mutants and humans and inspires his past self to reembrace his powers and use Cerebro to locate Mystique.

Storm, Bishop, Colossus, Warpath, Sunspot, Iceman and Blink are killed protecting the monastery. As the Sentinels enter, they fire at Shadowcat, Wolverine, Magneto and Professor X. Shadowcat lets go and the future is changed.

Charles inside Cerebro

Professor X used a serum to walk again, but that made him lose his powers.

As Wolverine wakes up in 1973, he encounters a young McCoy and Xavier and tells them that he was sent from the future; asking for his help to stop the war in the future. Professor X initially refuses to help, but then agrees, only for Raven. The three go to Peter Maximoff's house where they ask for his help to free Magneto. 

Onboard a plane, Professor X and Magneto argue on how they abandoned each other and their kind. Wolverine, Charles, Erik and Hank arrive, where Erik plans to kill Mystique to prevent the program. She is shot in the leg before escaping through the window. Erik chases after her and pulls the bullet out of her leg and plans to kill her with that bullet, but Beast attacks Erik while Mystique escapes. After seeing Stryker, Wolverine briefly does not know why he’s there and who young Charles is.

Professor X refuses to take the serum, allowing him to use Cerebro to locate Mystique.

Back at the mansion, Charles eventually refuses to take the serum and uses Cerebro to find Mystique. His mind is not focused because of his self-doubt. To remedy that, Wolverine has Charles look through his mind as it is connected between present and future, letting Charles telepathically talks to the older Professor X where he is asked to hope again. As Wolverine, Professor X and Hank go to the unveiling of the Sentinels to find Mystique, the Sentinels begin attacking the public, where President Nixon and Bolivar Trask are taken to a safe room, followed by Mystique in disguise. Mystique slightly grazes Magneto's neck with a plastic gun before being convinced by Professor X via telepathy to not kill Trask. Mystique agrees and as Magneto would be executed for his actions, Charles lets both go. At the same time, as a mutant was seen to save the President, the Sentinel program is decommissioned and Bolivar Trask arrested for trying to sell American military secrets, meaning Charles effectively finished what Wolverine started and changed the future.

X-Men: Apocalypse

In 1983, Professor Xavier is teaching his students at his fully working School for Gifted Youngsters. He welcomes back Alex Summers and his brother Scott whom he accepts into his school.

At night, during an earthquake, Charles walks in to check on Jean Grey who has a nightmare about the end of the world, but assures her that is was only a bad dream.

After learning from Hank that Moira MacTaggert was in Egypt when the earthquake began, he and Alex visit her at the CIA. From Moira, they learn that a group of fanatics had been worshiping an ancient being known as Apocalypse who is believed to have been the first mutant in existence.  Returning to the X-Mansion with Moira  Charles finds that Raven has returned alongside a young mutant she rescued named Kurt Wagner. Raven proceeds to ask for Charles help in locating Erik Lehnsherr who has resurfaced after his family had been killed.  Using Cerebro Xavier manages to locate Magneto and begs him to come back to the X-Mansion. Apocalypse catches wind of this and takes control of Xavier through Cerebro.

Before getting controlled, Xavier is horrified and awestruck by Apocalypse's power. After Apocalypse uses Cerebro to convince the world's government to send their nuclear missiles into space, Xavier tells Alex to destroy Cerebro to keep Apocalypse from doing any further damage and knocking him unconscious in the process. Xavier is then kidnapped by Apocalypse and his Horsemen and taken to Cairo, Egypt where Apocalypse has Xavier use his powers to deliver a message to the whole world. While doing this, however, he manages to send a secret message to Jean telling her of their location. Apocalypse then proceeds to try and transfer his consciousness into Xavier's body so he can gain his powers of telepathy. The transfer begins and Xavier loses his hair in the process before he is saved by Nightcrawler. Following a failed escape attempt, Apocalypse proceeds to call out Xavier and reminds him they are still connected mentally. Xavier can do nothing but feel and listen as Mystique and Quicksilver are tortured.

Xavier, fortunately, remembers that he and Apocalypse do share a psychic connection that allows him to get inside Apocalypse head and overpower him. Apocalypse, however, eventually overcomes Xavier and proceeds to brutally beat him in the astral plane while Scott, Hank, and a reformed Magneto combat his physical body. All seems hopeless until Jean having unlocked the power of the Phoenix  alongside a reformed Storm together vaporize Apocalypse on the astral plane and his physical body. The effort apparently kills Charles, but Jean detects that he is still alive and is able to heal him. Charles wakes up and gives Moira the memories from cuba and asks for her forgiveness. The next day Xavier and Lehnsherr talk about humanity still not accepting mutants and ask him if he is ever fearful that one day humans will come for the students Xavier responds that while it does bother him he feels confident he can protect them all and Erik parts on friendly terms with Charles. Charles proceeds to watch Raven train the new X-Men consisting of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Storm, and Quicksilver in the Danger Room.

Even though he didn't appear in the film, Colossus mentions that Charles Xavier is at the X-Mansion.

When Deadpool blew himself up after blaming himself for the death of Vanessa Carlysle, Colossus brought him to the X-Mansion to recover. While there, Deadpool began complaining that he never saw other X-Men around the mansion apart from Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. While ranting, Deadpool was unaware that Professor X, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Quicksilver were in a room behind him. Beast quietly closed the door so that he did not notice them.

X-Men: Days of Future Past 2023

After Logan wakes up, he sees that Storm, Kitty, Peter, Bobby, Hank, Rogue, Jean Grey and Cyclops all have survived. Logan then finds Charles, who told him he has a history class to teach. Upon telling Charles he needs to brush up on everything that happens after 1973, Charles realized this was the moment in the apocalyptic future Wolverine went back in time and the Wolverine he met in 1973 was finally back. Charles then tells Logan they have a lot of catching up to do and helps him brush up on everything that happened following his drowning by Magneto. Logan gave Xavier his memories of his past timeline to strengthen their bond and friendship.

Westchester Incident

In 2028, Charles Xavier developed Alzheimer's and suffer a massive seizure that injured 600 people, and killed 7 mutants, including several members of the X-Men. Logan would take Charles to a place in Mexico near the Mexico-U.S. border. Logan would also ask for the assistance of Caliban to help care for Charles.

By 2029, Xavier is one of the last mutants left on the planet. In his old age, he has developed a form of dementia not unlike Alzheimer's. It was particularly dangerous for Charles as he could no longer control his immense psychic powers. He began to have massive uncontrollable psychic seizures, one of these seizures took place while he was in the X-Mansion. It affected over 600 people in Westchester and resulted in countless injuries and the death of several members of the X-Men in what came to be known as the Westchester Incident.

Soon after Wolverine removed him from society, arranging for him to be cared for in an abandoned smelting factory so that his psychic episodes could not hurt anyone else. While there, Xavier began to sense a foreign mutant, who was later discovered to be Laura, Wolverine's daughter.

After Transigen came after them, Wolverine, Xavier, and Laura went on the run, heading towards a supposed mutant paradise called Eden. While on the way Xavier endured another psychic seizure in a casino, nearly killing hundreds of people in the hotel and buildings around because he was sedated by Wolverine.

While resting at a place, Laura is seen reading one of the X-Men comics, Charles Xavier is the leader of the X-Men alongside Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue, Colossus looking for a place called Eden.

While resting at the home of a family they had assisted, Xavier began to remember the circumstances of his isolation, and how he had been the reason many of his students were paralyzed or dead. He believed himself unworthy of Wolverine's help, declaring this to X-24, whom he believed to be Wolverine. X-24 stabbed him through the chest, a wound which would prove fatal.

Wolverine buried him in an unmarked grave in a forest beside a lake.

Charles was more than a leader, more than a teacher. He was a friend. When we were afraid, he gave us strength. When we were alone, he gave us a family. He may be gone, but his teachings live on through us. His students. Wherever we may go, we must carry on his vision. And that is a vision of a world united."

Xavier has built a lifetime reputation on being caring and compassionate to his fellow mutants. Even as a child, he helped a young Mystique find her place in the world. He refuses to give up on people, always believing they can be saved, as seen in Mystique, Jean Grey and even his "arch rival" Magneto. His greatest attribute is his ability to believe in hope and to never give up no matter the odds.

Throughout his adult life Xavier has taught and trained mutants, to not only deal with their abilities but more importantly how to live in and cope in a world that fears them. He became a mentor and father figure to many mutants, giving them a home when many were lost. Even Lehnsherr, his long-time rival, holds Xavier in very high regard, knowing everything he's done for mutant.[2]

However, Xavier was not always so hopeful and heroic. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the loss of Raven, his legs, his students and his friend Erik was too much for him, and he hid away from the world in the mansion. Xavier had lost hope and became addicted to Hank McCoy's serum that returned him his legs, refusing to let his powers return and overwhelm him. It took the combined efforts of Wolverine and the future Xavier to return him to his usual heroic personality by showing him all the good he will do, and all the suffering that could be prevented [1].

There are also moments when Xavier reveals a more manipulative aspect of himself, such as when he placed psychic blocks on Jean Grey's powers out of fear that she would be uncontrollable, or when he defies his own code of only using his powers on a willing subject, such as Mystique or Magneto. When controlling certain aspects of those around him he firmly believes that it is for their own good, refusing to acknowledge or listen to the consequences this can have, a trait which led to Jean destroying his original body and him and Mystique becoming estranged, the latter of which Charles solely blamed Erik for until their reunion in 1973 when he finally admitted what controlling her had done.

Unlike most mutants, Xavier does not hate humans, believing that mutants and humans can find a way to coexist, and he will not risk human lives any more than he would a mutant's. While preferring more diplomatic solutions, Xavier isn't afraid to be forceful, but only if it is the last resort.[3] In the revised timeline, his ability to condone violence to the sake of defending his students and other innocents is greatly increased after defeating Apocalypse, enough to impress and satisfy Erik, who saw him as naive and foolish for being so trusting of people in the past and not being truly willing to fight.

Xavier has deep and complex relationships with many of the main X-Men characters. Both he and Erik Lehnsherr have a very complicated history, fighting each other over several decades, and yet there is still an almost brotherly connection between them. The two have spent many hours playing chess together and debating mutant affairs. Xavier and Raven Darkholme also have a complicated relationship, with Raven being almost like a sister for Xavier, despite her troubled past [3]. Hank McCoy is Charles' greatest ally, as he refused to give up on him, even when Charles had given up on himself. Logan's angry and self-centered attitude contrasts with Charles, but the two worked together to unlock the secrets of the former's mind, and eventually, Logan grew to see Xavier as a mentor-like figure and became one of his most loyal X-Men [1].

Come 2029, Xavier had mostly lost his good nature. Having been hidden by Logan for numerous years in isolation, Charles spent his days randomly mumbling unless given his medication. When he had clarity, Charles was bitter, often swore and crazy. However, the last spark of his compassion was directed at Laura, who was Logan's genetic daughter; Xavier spent his last hours trying to help her escape from the Reavers and serving as a grandfather figure to Laura before enjoying time with the Munson family during his stay at their house. He also urged Logan to aid the Munsons' when their horses ran amuck and consciously used his powers for a final time to calm the horses, showing that his great mind was not completely gone yet.

Powers, Abilities, & Weaknesses

  • Telepathy - As one of the most powerful telepaths in the world, Xavier has a wide array of telepathic powers. An example would be when Charles scans a person's brain and finds any information he needs, including memories. He used this power to help Logan unlock his memories, and in the 70's when he used this ability to search the mind of a woman, so he could see what flight Raven was going to take. Charles' telepathic abilities were so great that Apocalypse desired to possess his body, despite already having extremely powerful telepathic abilities. Thanks to having his powers greatly enhanced by Apocalypse, Charles' telepathy is now at the point where he can communicate with everyone across the whole world without the aid of Cerebro (which was destroyed by Havok under Charles' orders, as Apocalypse was trying to take control of Cerebro).
    • Telepathic Cloak - He can make himself invisible by manipulating the minds of others. He used this to hide himself, Magneto, and all the assault troops while en route to the dacha of the Russian general without being detected while in the back of the caravan.
    • Telepathic Communication - He is able to telepathically communicate with others. He demonstrated this when he communicated with a young Cyclops[4], and when he communicated with Moira and Erik.[3]
    • Mental Detection - He is able to sense where nearby mutants are. He demonstrated this when he sensed that Rogue had left the mansion and was at the train station. This ability is enhanced when he uses Cerebro. He was also able to find out that Jean Grey had left the X-mansion.[2]
    • Mind Control - He is able to manipulate the minds of others to get them to do what he wants them to do. He does not like using this ability to make people do what he wants them to do all the time as he said when talking to Magneto while going to Jean Grey's house when she was a child.
    • Mental Possession - He is able to enter the mind of another to control their body and see from their perspective. He demonstrated this at the dacha of a Russian general and possessed the mind of a guard.
    • Mental Sedation - He can make others fall asleep simply by telling them to.
    • Mind Transferral - When his body was destroyed[2], he transferred his consciousness into a host body, which is seemingly an advanced version of mental possession. Although, this is never explained or made clear. It is believed the body he transferred himself to is his brain dead twin brother Patrick, his powers being enough to resuscitate the body, though the body shared Charles partial paralysis.
    • Paralyzation - He can mentally paralyze others, making it appear as if time has been stopped, although he could also paralyze only the body without rendering people's minds frozen as well.[5] If Charles transfers much of himself to possess and paralyze the body, he can feel pain and discomfort his target feels as if he was experiencing it himself, though without any harm coming to his real body. 
    • Mental Link - He has the ability to develop a mental link with any person which remains as a connection to that individual. This was shown when Jean Grey linked with him to communicate with the others in the X-Jet before perishing. Charles uses this power to project his mind into the future by linking the future Wolverine's mind and use them as a bridge to it where he is able to connect to and converse with his future self.[1]
    • Mnemokinesis  - He can manipulate the memories individuals. Xavier can erase, restore, or even implant false memories into a person's mind.
      • Memory Implantation - He once threatened Wolverine, that he could make him believe he was a six-year-old girl.
      • Mental Amnesia - He has the ability to cause loss of particular memories and amnesia in another person or group of people. Here, he used this power while passionately kissing the beautiful Moira MacTaggert and makes her forget all the time that she spent with Xavier and the mutants[3] (although she recalls fragments, including the kiss). This might have been used to save himself and made it look like Jean killed him.[2]
      • Memory Restoration - Along with erasing memories, Charles has the ability to restore a person's memories as well.[6] This was demonstrated when he restored the memories of Moira MacTaggert, which he had initially erased, causing her to remember all the time she spent with him.
    • Telepathic Illusion - Charles is able to generate realistic illusions. Charles could make himself and others invisible to others.[3] Professor X uses this power to convince Mystique to not kill Bolivar Trask.[1] His illusions took the form of himself, but able to stand. Any damages he had on his body would appear on his projection. His illusion based projection allowed him to perceive events from afar with only his projection being present.
    • Psychic Barriers - Charles was able to put mental blocks in Jean Grey's mind so she couldn't unlock the Phoenix part of her personality.
    • Psionic Blasts - When his powers were boosted by Cerebro, Charles had enough power to cause every mutant in the world to experience a lethal, excruciating pain. He was also able to make every human experience the same lethal pain when Magneto reversed Cerebro. These blasts could not effect Magneto, as he was wearing his helmet. When his powers were out of control due to mental illness, Charles would release psychic pulses that could effect hundreds of people across over a mile radius. They paralyzed and tortured all those effected, and could have killed anyone who was forced to experience it for more then a few minutes.
    • Psionic Resistance - According to William Stryker, the mind control serum will have no effect on Xavier, as his resistance to other people's telepathy make it very difficult to control him. He can resist psychic attacks from others and protect his allies. It is likely Emma Frost could not telepathically attack Xavier or Erik as Xavier defended both their minds from her, though he did feel a slight sting from her when trying to read her mind.
    • Animal Manipulation - Charles was shown to be able to affect animals with his telepathic abilities when he concentrated on a group of stray horses belonging to the Munson family and having them return calmly to their owners. He was able to do this when not taking his medication for his mental illness, though he ran the risk of having a psychic seizure.

  • Genius-Level Intellect  - A natural genius, Xavier is a leading authority on genetics, mutation, and psionics. He also possesses considerable expertise in other life sciences. He is highly talented in devising equipment for utilizing and enhancing psionic powers. Xavier is also quite the masterful tactician and strategist, effectively evaluating situations and devising swift responses.

  • Multilingual - Xavier has shown to be fluent in many languages. He was shown to be able to speak Russian.[3] During his speech to the whole world, he was able to speak several different native languages to respective countries.[6] He was able to speak Spanish to Laura.[7] However, this could be a result of his psychic abilities and he translates his voice inside people's heads so people who speak different languages could understand him.

    • Original Timeline

    • Neural Inhibitor Helmet - Stryker was able to build a special helmet that blocked Charles' abilities.
    • Emma Frost Diamond Form - When Emma Frost was in her diamond form, Charles was unable to use his powers on her, with the diamonds acting as some sort of telepathic shield.
    • Magneto's Helmet - Made of an unknown material, Magneto's helmet is impervious to Charles' powers.

    Revised Timeline

    • Neurodegenerative Disease - While a genius mind and tremendous mental powers, Xavier was not immune the potential decay of his clarity. In his advanced age, Xavier’s focus and memory began to slip. At times, he would go into random rambles. This also had an unfortunate affect on his telepathy, as he would seemingly be repeating the thoughts of others in his vicinity, such as a commercial add. During his random seizures, he would uncontrollably sense psionic waves throughout a large radius, paralyzing everyone within the area and potentially killing everyone if left unchecked for too long. He was forced to rely on medication provided by Logan to stop the seizures, which made him less clear of mind and unable to use his powers. When not taking his medicine, he could use his powers to an extent, but risked suffering another seizure as a result.
    • Paraplegic - Xavier has been unable to walk due to spinal damage, suffered when one of the bullets Magneto bounced off using his magnetic powers accidentally hit him in 1962.
    • Hank McCoy's Serum - Beast's serum gives Charles the ability to walk, but it blocks his abilities.

    Trivia

    • Professor X and Wolverine are the only characters to have had memories of the original timeline. Wolverine retained his as a result of having his consciousness projected back in time, while Professor X used his telepathy in 1973 to read Wolverine's mind.
    • Michael Jackson was interested in portraying Professor X.[8]
    • In the Ultimate Marvel comics continuity, Charles is paralyzed when Magneto stabs him in the back with a metal spear. This was loosely adapted in X-Men: First Class, where Charles loses his ability to walk from being struck by a stray bullet that was deflected by Magneto's powers.
    • It is unknown when Charles stopped taking Beast's serum to treat his spine in the original timeline. It should be noted, however, that he was walking in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, set during 1979, and a 1986 flashback sequence in X-Men: The Last Stand.
    • In X-Men: First Class, Beast asks Xavier if he can shave him, in order to better use the Cerebro, but Xavier replies "Don't touch my hair.", thus making a joke about his elder appearance. He does it again at the end of the movie, complaining about getting old and saying to Moira MacTaggert that he'll soon become bald.
      • In the revised timeline, Xavier lost his hair in his 50s because of Apocalypse trying to transfer his consciousness into his body; as a result, it could never grow back.
    • In X-Men, Professor X told Wolverine that he met Magneto when he was 17. However, in X-Men: First Class, he seems to meet him at the age of 30.
    • For an unknown reason, even while in P. Xavier's body, Professor X still requires a wheelchair to move around despite presumably not having spine damage in that body.
    • By 2023 of the original timeline, Professor X has transitioned from a wheelchair to a hoverchair that allows him greater mobility.
      • However, in Logan, the technology to create such a chair doesn't appear to exist.
    • Professor X is referenced to in Deadpool when Colossus attempts to bring Wade Wilson to see him in order to join the X-Men. Wade asks whether it is Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy playing him.
    • The live action version of Professor X appears to be British as opposed to American like in the comics. Both Stewart and McAvoy use RP British accents for the role and it is further cemented by Cyclops who describes the Xavier family mansion as 'used to be British like everything else that's American'.
    • Wolverine and Professor X were the only two characters to transfer their consciousnesses into their other bodies. Charles transferred his consciousness into his twin brother's body just before his old one got disintegrated by Jean Grey in the original timeline, while Logan transferred his consciousness into his younger body in the revised timeline.
    • In Logan, he and Laura were the only two characters to speak in Spanish.
